Hydraulic Car Lift (SolidWorks)

Mechanism design with safety factors and manufacturability; graded unit (A).

Overview

For my college graded unit (final module to determine HND Grade), I designed and documented a 2-post hydraulic car lift to meet a client brief of 3-ton capacity, 2 m lift height, and an 18-week / £10,000 delivery target. I evaluated three concepts with a decision matrix and selected the 2-post design for safety, accessibility, and stability. I produced drawings and CAD models, chose S275JR mild steel, ran strength/deflection calculations, and specified direct-drive cylinders and a 3 HP power unit. I validated anchors and safety latches through testing and confirmed compliance with relevant HSE guidance. Final costed build came to £9,421.47 (within budget), and the project achieved an A grade.

Process

  • Inital designs were scissor lift, 2 post, and 4 post, each with their own sketch and design. Opted for 2 post based on criteria.
  • Modelled assemblies and interference checks in SolidWorks.
  • Estimated loads and safety factors on members and pins.

Outcomes

  • Achieved graded unit A A (year 1 year 2).
  • Fully operational solidworks assembly.
  • first large-scale project, gained valuable skills.
